Dr El-Sanhouri received his undergraduate degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. He earned his medical degree from Wayne State School of Medicine and completed his ophthalmology residency at the Kresge Eye Institute, Detroit. Dr. El-Sanhouri completed his retina fellowship at the Cincinnati Eye Institute.
