Dr. Delistathis has been practicing medicine for the past 16 years. During that time, she has sought to improve the health of her patients through both traditional and integrative medicines. She has worked at Suburban and Sibley Hospitals as an inpatient Hospitalist for 12 years prior to going into Primary Care in 2014. With this clinical experience, she grew to understand that conventional medicine does not always yield the answer for disease treatment and prevention. Her interest in more holistic practices while “seeing each patient's whole picture” led her to actively pursuing her certificate in Functional Medicine. With a special interest in women's health, she is very excited to join her practice with Capital Integrative Health in order to bring a balanced approach to the current practice of medicine.
Dr. Delistathis’ primary goal is to work as a team with her patients, bring her inpatient medical expertise and investigative skills to the table, and to pursue a preventative approach with the tools offered by functional medicine. She hopes to bring value to each patient’s life and will individualize each treatment plan using both natural treatments and prescription medications when deemed necessary.
Having grown up abroad throughout most of her life, Dr. Delistathis loves a multicultural approach to living life. She is fluent in Arabic, French and proficient in Spanish. She enjoys learning about different cultures and cuisines and loves working and living in the nation’s capital.
She graduated from Princeton University in 1994 where she pursued a degree in Molecular Biology and did several medical research internships at NIH. After graduating from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2000, she completed her internal medicine residency program at the George Washington University School of Medicine in 2003. She also holds a Masters in Public Health from Columbia University. Her long term goal is to be part of the wellness movement and improve people’s lives at every level.
The specialty of internal medicine is an area of primary care for adults. Dr. Delistathis specializes in diagnosing and treating cross-system illnesses that may affect multiple organ systems. When necessary, Dr. Delistathis can also refer patients to specialists when medically needed. As an example, patients with severe allergies could be referred to an allergist for added diagnostic tests or treatment options.
Specializing in the field of functional medicine, Dr. Delistathis focuses on the underlying causes of disease, as opposed to simply treating symptoms as they arise. Functional medicine doctors often focus their efforts on preventive measures, ensuring patients are less likely to contract illnesses or conditions. Dr. Delistathis typically work to develop a close, therapeutic relationship with patients, taking many aspects of a patient’s life into consideration when providing care.
